I signed up for Low Carb Program back in the winter, mostly because my last blood test came back with numbers my doctor wasn’t thrilled about. I’d tried a few free apps before and quit within a week. This one stuck, so I figured it was worth writing down what my experience has actually been like.

What you actually get

Low Carb Program is a structured education and coaching platform aimed at people dealing with things like prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or just carrying extra weight. It’s not a random meal app. There’s a proper course, a huge recipe library, health tracking and weekly virtual meetups with coaches. It also happens to be used by the NHS, which is part of why I trusted it enough to pay.

What stood out to me

A few things genuinely surprised me after a couple of months in.

  • The recipes are usable. There are over 2,000 of them, and I could filter for what I actually eat. As a mostly-vegetarian person I was expecting slim pickings. I was wrong.
  • The barcode scanner. Logging food is the part I always abandon. Scanning a packet and having it fill in the details made me keep up the habit far longer than usual.
  • The meetups. I was sceptical about joining a video call with strangers. But having a coach and a few familiar faces checking in kept me honest on the weeks I wanted to slide.
  • The education is paced. It drips content daily instead of dumping everything at once, so I never felt buried.

The results claims are bold (average 7% weight loss, one in four reaching type 2 remission at a year), and the member stories are frankly inspiring. I’m not there yet, but I’ve dropped weight and my energy is better.

The downsides, honestly

It isn’t perfect. The interface felt a little busy at first, and it took me a week to find where everything lived. The monthly price of £14.99 adds up if you don’t commit, so paying annually is clearly the sensible move, but that’s a bigger upfront sum. And if you want a quick calorie counter with no structure, this is more than you need.

My verdict

For me it’s been worth the money. The combination of real coaching, sane recipes and daily nudges is what finally made low carb eating something I could keep doing rather than a two week experiment. If you’re dealing with blood sugar or weight and you’ve bounced off free apps before, Lowcarbprogram.com is the one I’d point you toward. Grab the annual plan, use the free Kickstarter guide, and actually show up to a meetup or two.
